Bats

Bats are flying mammals of the genus Chiroptera.

They are the only mammals that can fly. They prefer caves, barns, and attics, though some people build bathouses for them. They're also nocturnal.

In horror films, and animated cartoons, bats are depicted as scary creatures that attack humans unprovoked. In real life, they're timid, and only feed on insects. Even vampire bats won't go after humans, as they only thrive on the blood of other animals.

Hanna-Barbera had bats in many of their animated series and specials.

Jana of the Jungle

• "The Sting of the Tarantula": Jana summons bats to locate Montaro, who's contracted a virus from a tarantula.

Young Samson

• "The Lost City of the Dragon Men": The Dragon Men fly around on large bats.
• "Zuran's Creature": At the beginning of the episode, Samson and Goliath see a larger than normal bat with bulging eyes.

The Flintstones

• "Monster Fred": Dr. Dracuslab has a few bats at his disposal.
• "A Haunted House is Not a Home": A bat flies out of a window of Uncle Giggles' mansion.

Jonny Quest

• "Treasure of the Temple": The Quest team takes cover when vampire bats fly into their campsite.

Space Ghost

• "Creature King": The title villain's alien menagerie includes a bat. Later, in the "Council of Doom" episode, "Clutches of Creature King," his sulfur-breathing bats subdue and capture Space Ghost.

The Herculoids

• "Ruler of the Reptons": Right after Zandor, Dorno, and the Herculoids rescue Tara from the Reptons, the Reptons send their Destructo-Bats after them.

Moby Dick

• "The Aqua-Bats": Moby Dick pursues the Aqua-Bats when they catch Tom and Tub.

Mighty Mightor

• "Vampire Island": The tribe of Vampire Island unleash giant vampire bats.

Wacky Races

• The Gruesome Twosome's Creepy Coupe includes Bat Power.

Scooby-Doo Where Are You!

• The Season 1 and Season 2 intros both show bats flying by a haunted house. Bats also appear in the episodes "Decoy for a Dognapper" and "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts".

The Funky Phantom

• "Haunt in Inn": Bats fly into Widow Wilson's Inn in a couple of scenes.

The All-New Superfriends Hour

• "The Ghost": Jayna turns herself into a bat in one scene.

The Scooby-Doo Show

• "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats": Gramps the Vamp uses real vampire bats to scare the gang.

Drak Pack

• Drak Jr., Big D, and Vampira can all turn into bats. In addition, Big D often sends real bats to deliver messages to the Drak Pack.

Pac-Man

• "Pacula": Mezmaron transforms a bat into the eponymous vampire.

The Biskitts

• "A Biskitt Halloween": The Witch of Nidor sends a bat and a rat to capture Wags and Sweets. There are two other bats as well.

The New Adventures of Captain Planet

• "Going Bats, Man": The Planeteers strive to save bats that are being exploited by Robin Plunder for his horror movie.

• Oliver and the Artful Dodger: The title characters are scared out of Dreadly Manor by bats.
• Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School: The Spider Bats are deployed by Revolta to capture the Grimwood girls.
• The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn't: Johnny Cooke and Little Bear are frightened by a bat in one scene.
