Bewitched is a sitcom that premiered on ABC in 1964, and ran for eight seasons. Reruns aired on Saturday mornings in 1971.
Although the show proper was not a Hanna-Barbera production, the studio did the animation for the famous opening sequence. In addition, some of Tabitha's toys were Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters.
In the intro of Bewitched, Samantha rides on her broomstick and creates the Bewitched logo. Then another scene features Samantha with the opening credits, “Starring Elizabeth Montgomery”. As soon as the credits vanish, she tips her witch hat, and then a close up to her face she wiggles her nose, turning into a housewife. Her husband Darrin walks in while Samantha cooks something. Darrin kisses Samantha on the cheek, but then vanishes, leaving Darrin confused. Then Samantha, in the form of a cat, jumps onto Darrin’s hands, turning back into her witch form. Then they notice smoke coming from the stove.
Animated versions of Samantha and Darrin Stephens appeared in The Flintstones season 6 episode "Samantha", voiced by Elizabeth Montgomery andDick York, respectively. In 1972, there was an episode of The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie, called Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family. Then, in 1977, there was a short-lived spinoff, Tabitha, in which Tabitha Stevens was now an adult with a job.
Later, there was a 2005 movie version starring Nicole Kidman, that didn't live up to the success of the original series.
Several other cast members went on to voice Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters:
- Paul Lynde, who played Uncle Arthur, voiced Sylvester Sneekly/The Hooded Claw in The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, Mildew Wolf in It's the Wolf, Claude Pertwee in Where's Huddles? and Templeton in Charlotte's Web.
- Agnes Moorehead, who played Endora, voiced the Goose in Charlotte's Web.
- Bernard Fox, who played Dr. Bombay, voiced Eppy Brianstone in The Flintstones season 6 episode "No Biz Like Show Biz" and a few characters in the ABC Saturday Superstar Movie two-part episode "Oliver and the Artful Dodger".
- Gary Owens, who narrated the Quaker Oats sponsor billboards, went on to voice such characters as Space Ghost and Blue Falcon.
- Sandra Gould, the second actress to play Gladys Kravitz, voiced Daisy Kilgranite in The Flintstones episode, "The Little White Lie".
