C.L.U.T.Z. (Combined Level Unit Type Z) is a character from the CBS Storybreak episode of the same name. He was voiced by Hamilton Camp.
About C.L.U.T.Z.[]
C.L.U.T.Z. is a well-built, mostly-orange robot. The top of his head is shaped like a sugar loaf hat with an orange streak running down the middle as well as a reddish-orange band, the sides reddish-orange, and the brim a lighter shade of orange; he has yellow eyes, in which sometimes black pupils appear; black eyebrows; a spring sticking out his right jaw; other parts of him that are reddish-orange are the outlines surrounding his shoulders that simulate short-sleeves, the ridges of his mid-section, and his upper legs. He wears a black bowtie; a daisy on the left side of his chest; mid-length, silver peony gloves; has a couple white band aids on his right arm; a light gray panel with three white buttons above his waistline; a couple of white meter clocks below that, each with a red arrow and a couple black markings; a large, gray washer on each side of his waist; and boot sneakers with the top being black and lower part being mostly white with a section of each of them black. As his name suggests, he is indeed clumsy at times. He's nice, well-meaning, friendly, and helpful, but he tends to be accident-prone and unintentionally causes more harm than good. Because of this, he can get depressed.
After Rodney's parents contact Ralph's Robot Interplanetary to send for a new robot called the Butler ZX, the family gets an unexpected arrival from another robot instead. The robot introduces himself as C.L.U.T.Z., who trips and falls into the entrance of the residence. He explains that he was going to go down a trash chute to do away with himself, but before he could, he noticed the family's ad mentioning they were searching for a new robot and decided to offer his services to them. C.L.U.T.Z. also tells the Pentax family he was replaced by a Butler ZX and Rodney feels sorry for him. Rodney instantly grows attached to him and wants to keep him, but the parents would really rather have the Butler ZX. Mr. and Mrs. Pentax relent and let him stay to do the housekeeping and be Rodney's playmate. Mrs. Pentax leaves home for work at the office and tells C.L.U.T.Z. she expects the house to be spotless when she returns, and C.L.U.T.Z. promises her that. Mr. Pentax tells C.L.U.T.Z. and Rodney he'll be in the study in the meantime. While C.L.U.T.Z. does the cleaning in the living room, he explains to Rodney that when robots were first built, humans feared the emerging technology, but they relaxed once the robots were programmed not to be so menacing. Rodney tells he can play a game of moon ball with him later. C.L.U.T.Z. says that he's never played, but Rodney will teach him. When something gets clogged in the built-in vacuum extended from one of C.L.U.T.Z.'s arms, he says he'll just put it in reverse. Rodney tries to warn him not to do that, but before he can get him to stop, C.L.U.T.Z. expels everything to that sucked in the vacuum out of it and the living room is a mess. Mr. Pentax enters to see what's going on and says that Rodney's mom will be furious if she sees the mess. After cleaning up, C.L.U.T.Z. and Rodney head to the kitchen where C.L.U.T.Z. prepares some chili. When Rodney asks him if he can cook, he tells him he has experience in that. Rodney's mom returns sooner than expected and Rodney is surprised by this. She says she came as soon as she did to check on how things were going and for lunch. C.L.U.T.Z. presents Rodney's mom and dad with bowls of chili. They try it and enjoy it, but they find out that he overdid the cooking and made more than necessary.
Later, Rodney and C.L.U.T.Z. head to an arcade, and Rodney gives him the details about the object of the moon ball game. Rodney's three friends, two boys and a girl, named Johnny, Tyler, and Danno, exit a movie theater, and they see Rodney with his new robot. Rodney introduces C.L.U.T.Z. to his friends and they're quite impressed with him. Then, two boys named Torres Johnson and Angus come over and are joined by the Butler ZX. The boys make fun of C.L.U.T.Z. and Butler ZX insults C.L.U.T.Z., telling him he should've been retired long ago. C.L.U.T.Z. is offended by this. Rodney exaggerates to Torres and Angus that C.L.U.T.Z. is a great moon ball player and that he can beat ZX any day of the week. C.L.U.T.Z. tries to tell him that's not true and to get him to take back what he say, but Torres challenges Rodney and C.L.U.T.Z. to play against him, Angus, and ZX, and Rodney accepts. At the Moon Ball Astro Court, they have their match. C.L.U.T.Z. tries to catch the moon ball, but ends up crashing backwards into the dome glass. ZX tells C.L.U.T.Z. he shouldn't being playing this sport at his age and C.L.U.T.Z. literally gets steamed, as he reenters the match. While Danno cheers them on, the two teams continue, C.L.U.T.Z. tries to grab the ball from ZX, but ZX passes it to Torres, who drops it into the ring. At another point, C.L.U.T.Z. tries to get the ball again, but ZX extends his arm and steals the ball away from C.L.U.T.Z., and drops it into the ring. In each of these moments, throughout the game, the scoreboard shows Torres's team scoring points ahead of the opposing team and Torres's team ultimately wins. Afterwards, Torres gloats to C.L.U.T.Z. and Rodney, and Angus tells Rodney he knows a good scrap dealer if he needs one, belittling C.L.U.T.Z. further. C.L.U.T.Z. apologizes to Rodney for losing the game and Rodney tells him that he should've known better than to go against Torres. When Johnny asks when is the rematch, C.L.U.T.Z. says he'd rather not think about it nervously. C.L.U.T.Z. puts himself down for failing to win, but Rodney tells him he's still proud of him anyway. C.L.U.T.Z. gets teary-eyed and thanks him. He tells Rodney he'll practice every day and night to get better at the game. When C.L.U.T.Z. throws the ball, it bounces back and hits him in the face.
Back at home that night, Mr. Pentax thanks C.L.U.T.Z. for making the chili and Rodney says that it will last them for weeks. Mrs. Pentax tells Rodney he should get started on his homework and he says that C.L.U.T.Z. will help him with it. Rodney's parents try to watch the nightly news, but the picture of the TV console is acting up and Mr. Pentax says he'll call the repair service in the morning. The next morning, Rodney wakes up and as he makes an entrance, he's surprised to find C.L.U.T.Z. attempting to fix the TV. C.L.U.T.Z. figures who better to fix one machine than another, but Rodney isn't so sure that's a good idea, since C.L.U.T.Z. is no technician. Mr. Pentax enters and asks what's going on and his son tells him that C.L.U.T.Z. fixed the TV. Mr. Pentax is pleased with this. But when he turns on and sits in a hovering chair called a floater lounge, there's a problem with it. It malfunctions and it floats out of control, with Mr. Pentax hanging on for dear life. His wife enters the room and she ducks as the floater lounge heads towards her, then flies upwards. As it takes Mr. Pentax out the room along with it, Rodney presses a button that makes the glass door disappear so that his dad doesn't crash into and break the glass. He's then taken outside and over the balcony. Rodney and Mrs. Pentax head outside too, she exclaims that they're 99 stories high and he'll be killed. As Mr. Pentax keeps being carried by the floater lounger, a pair of sky cops happen to pass by in a flying vehicle. Rodney points out to his mom and C.L.U.T.Z. where his dad is being carried off to and C.L.U.T.Z. feels guilty for being the cause of this. The sky cops spot Mr. Pentax and the floater lounge, and one of them, Officer Murphy, tosses a grapple hook to grab the chair. Mr. Pentax is then brought back safely to the ground. Mrs. Pentax goes to hug her husband, happy and relieved he made it back in one piece. Officer Murphy interrogates about what just happened. C.L.U.T.Z. thinks he knows what caused the malfunction with the hovering chair and Rodney's parents are unhappy, and displeased to learn that he was behind this. They consider having C.L.U.T.Z. sent to the scrap yard, then replace him, and he remorsefully imagines his fate there. Officer Murphy hands Mr. Pentax a long fine. The next night, after tucking in Rodney for bed, C.L.U.T.Z. decides to leave on his own and head to the scrap yard for real this time, knowing that he's caused nothing but trouble and not wanting to be burden anymore.
Another morning, Rodney finds out that C.L.U.T.Z. has gone missing and asks his parents where he went. His mom tells him he left, as he must've heard them talking about what they were planning to do with him. They're already replacing him with a Butler ZX. But C.L.U.T.Z. is the only robot he wants to be his playmate and he doesn't want to play moon ball ever again if he has to play with some other robot. So he goes off to look for him. When Rodney gets to the scrap yard, one of the scrap yard worker robots passes him to another worker robot and that worker robot puts him on a conveyor belt, on which he's to enter a tunnel to be destroyed. C.L.U.T.Z. sees his friend in danger and manages to rescue him just in the nick of time. He goes to grab Rodney before he ends up getting crushed. They're glad to have each other back and embrace. C.L.U.T.Z. tells Rodney to take a tunnel as an exit and to leave him behind because he's a danger to him. But Rodney wants him to return home with him as he still considers him his friend since he was saved after all.
At the Pentaxes' home once more, Rodney's parents contact Officer Murphy in hopes that he can locate the whereabouts of their son. He tells them that he saw Rodney earlier and that he left his book behind. He asks what the noise is, as he can hardly hear them. Mrs. Pentax tells him it's the Butler ZX, who's overly vacuuming around their home and mentions he's a clean freak. Mr. Pentax is annoyed by this when he vacuums and tells him to stop. But the Butler ZX insists that contaminants are dangerous to humans. When the doorbell rings, the Butler ZX tells them he'll get the door. C.L.U.T.Z. and Rodney return home and Rodney's parents are very happy, and relieved, to see him. They were worried about him and Rodney talks about how C.L.U.T.Z. came to his rescue. Fed up with the Butler ZX's obsessive-compulsive disorder and bad cooking, Mr. Pentax tells him that that's enough and Mrs. Pentax demands he return to Ralph's Robots. The Butler ZX complies, but warns them about the unhealthy conditions where they live is harmful due to the uncleanliness. Rodney asks his parents if they can keep C.L.U.T.Z. for good. They have second thoughts about letting him go, saying that he makes good chili and he cleans their home well, so they allow him to stay. C.L.U.T.Z. is happy and pleased, but he trips again. Mr. Pentax suggests that he might need glasses. Rodney and C.L.U.T.Z. hug each other again.
