Gulliver's Travels is a satirical novel by Jonathan Swift, written in 1726.
It tells of the voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, who sails to many strange fictional lands. His first visit is to the island of Lilliput, whose tiny inhabitants capture him, and then allow him to stay despite a war with the inhabitants of Blefuscu.
He then visits Brobdingnag, a land whose citizens are giants.
Gulliver visits other lands as well, including Japan, which is the only real place in the book. Lastly, he ends up in the land of the horselike Houynhnmns and the humanoid Yahoos. Oddly, Lilliput is the only land most people think of when the book is mentioned.
There have been several movie versions of the story, most notably an animated movie from 1939, produced by Fleischer Studios, and a contemporary version from 2010, starring Jack Black.
Hanna-Barbera had a few versions of the story.
The Adventures of Gulliver[]
- This animated series followed the adventures of Gary Gulliver, the teenage American descendant of Lemuel Gulliver, and his dog, Tag, as they end up in Lilliput after a shipwreck, befriend the tiny people, and try to outsmart Captain John Leech, who is after Gary's treasure map.
The New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn[]
- "The Little People": Huck, Tom, and Becky end up on Lilliput, where Huck is captured and forced by the king to marry his daughter, Princess Tina. However, Tina is already in love with Bitto, one of the commoners.
Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space[]
- "The Mini-Man Menace": General Midgko's robot army captures Alan Mayberry by tying him down, the same way that the Lilliputians captured Gulliver.
Challenge of the Superfriends[]
- "Fairy Tale of Doom": The Legion of Doom traps Superman in a copy of Gulliver's Travels, along with Brainiac.
Famous Classic Tales[]
- A more faithful adaptation of the novel aired on CBS in 1979. It is also the only version that has Gulliver traveling to lands besides Lilliput, one other to be exact. Since Gulliver stays home for a while in the book, this animation conveniently ends after he encounters the pirate ship.
