About Joey[]
Joey is the brother of Joan. He is a slim, Caucasian, pre-teen boy with light brown hair and side-swept bangs. He wears a medium gray cowboy hat with a black band around it; a red neckerchief; an ice blue shirt with folded collar, rolled-up sleeves, and fly front; light blue jeans; a black belt with a gray buckle; and medium brown boots. He is close to his sister, but can be rash when it comes to secrets and has a tendency of not keeping them as such.
Joey and Joan have a race to the corral on horseback. Their mother calls them to grab a lunch bag to take to their father. As Joey horseback rides, he attempts to seize it, but misses. His sister gets it instead. The two are also asked to go to town to pick up supplies from a general store. After bringing their dad his lunch and hearing the family might have to move if his excavation for dinosaur bones isn't a success, Joey takes a short cut with his horse and Joan follows him with hers. Joey's horse comes to a halt and he's thrown off of it. He finds out why his horse suddenly stopped, as he finds out from Joan, who notices there's a rattlesnake behind him. She comes to his defense and tells him to go, but the rattler approaches them and they huddle each other, anticipating the worst. Then, a large creature's tail unexpectedly appears and swipes the snake aside. The creature is a stegosaur who's alive and can actually speak. The siblings are dumbfounded and can hardly believe the sight of this. The stegosaur says he should thank them for coming to their rescue and they do. He tells them he's the last, surviving reptile of his kind and he almost always keeps to himself to avoid unwanted attention, due to his shyness. But for those two, he was willing to come to their aid. He tells them to call his name if they're in trouble again. Except, they don't know his name and he tells them he's nameless. After Joan suggested Fred and Joey suggested Murray, the stegosaur didn't feel that either of those names suited him. Joan then suggests George and he's satisfied with it, as he likes how it rolls off the tongue when he says it.
Joan and Joey arrive in town and they see a boy named Mark. Joey tries to tell him they found a real, live, talking dinosaur, even though both he and Joan promised George they'd keep that their secret and agreed to that. But without any proof, Mark finds this far-fetched. Joan rebukes him for his betrayal, but he tells her he tells Mark everything and doesn't see the point in having secrets if he can't share. They visit the general store owner, Mr. Clarkson, when a man enters frantically and tells them that there's been a bank robbery. Joan and Joey are asked by the police if they know anything about this, but they mention they were in the store and weren't aware of it until after they heard about it. Joey goes with the police for a ride to the excavation site where his dad is, while Joan goes off to find George. While riding her horse, Cloudy, across the road and prior to getting to town, Joan came across two men riding in a black sedan earlier and they, along with a third man, are revealed to be the robbers. At the excavation area, one of the police tells Joey and his dad that the robbers always travel by car to the banks they rob, then travel by plane to ensure a better chance at a clean getaway. Joey and his dad ride in the cop car with the police again to search for the robbers.
Following the robbers' attempt to kidnap and punish Joan, and George coming to save the day again, Joey, his dad, and the police get to where they are in time. As the robbers are brought into custody, the kids' dad finds a chewing gum-covered stegosaur tooth spat out and left behind by George. Their dad is thrilled to make this discovery and because of this, he tells them they won't have to move after all. Joan and Joey give each other a congratulatory handshake. After hearing about this good news, he's glad for them, but tells them he must get going to keep from becoming known to the world before other paleontologists discover his existence. He tells them to keep him in their thoughts. Joan gives him a going away present. Joey asks Joan what she gave him and it's more sticks of bubblegum, as shown when George blows and pops one, as he heads off at dusk.
