Monster Fred is an episode of The Flintstones.
Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble decide to go bowling after work. Wilma Flintstone suggests they take Dino with them, since he's been in the house all day, and they do so. While the men go into the bowling alley, Dino stays in the car, puts on a Beatles wig, and listens to a rock and roll song on the radio.
Fred decides to play Alley 13, but Barney has a bad feeling about it. His fears are well-founded, for when Fred gets a strike, the ball rebounds, and hits him on the head. As a result, Fred is out of it, and talking like a child, saying, 'Tell me a story, Mommy." Barney realizes he needs a doctor. He first chooses Dr. Sigrock Freep. Freep uses an X-ray machine on Fred, and recites the song 'Dem Bones," which gets on Barney's nerves. After the doctor pretends to saw Fred in half, and then tries to make him disappear, Barney tells him both he and Fred will disappear.
Barney calls Betty after deciding to take Fred to see Dr. Len Frankenstone. She tells him she and Wilma will meet them there. Unknown to them, Len has built a personality transfer machine. He uses it on a temperamental dinosaur and a laughing turtle. His colleague, Dr. Zero advises him to quit while he's ahead, but he wants to test it on a human. When Fred, Barney, and Dino arrive, he switches Fred and Dino's personalities. Eventually, he switches the personalities of the Flintstones and Rubbles, and even those of Dr. Zero and Dino. He finally returns everyone to normal, but when they all leave, he and Fred have switched personalities.
On the way home, Fred tells Wilma he'll never have another accident, but then, a car driven by Dr. Dracuslab runs over his foot. This doctor promises to take care of him, but Fred, seeing that he's a vampire, runs back home with his wife and friends close behind. Dracuslab and his bats fly away for another house call.
Back home, the Flintstones and Rubbles have chop suey for dinner. Barney tricks Fred into thinking Pebbles can talk, and Fred goes ballistic and chases him out of the house. He tries to bowl Barney down with a boulder, but the huge rock hits him on the head, and once again, Fred is dazed and acting like a child. Barney chooses Dr. Jekyllrock this time around.
Trivia[]
- Dr. Frankenstone and Dr. Zero are caricatures of Dr. Ben Casey and Dr Zorba, respectively.
- The characters previously had cameos in "The Blessed Event," when Fred saw them at the hospital, and commented that he felt like he'd seen them before. They entered a room, and the words "On the Air" flashed over the door.
- In "The Blessed Event," Dr. Zero is tall, but in "Monster Fred," he's short.
- The episode's title is misleading, since Fred doesn't actually become a monster.
