Pebbles' Birthday Party is a Season 5 episode of The Flintstones.

Summary[]

Fred Flintstone's snoring is so loud that it disturbs everyone, including Baby Puss, who leaves to spend the night in the animal shelter. Wilma Flintstone and the Rubbles try every possible way to stop the snoring, but nothing works until Barney Rubble places a nozzle over Fred's mouth, sending the snores underground. This wakes up a pair of gophers, one of whom thinks the other is snoring.

The next morning, Fred and Wilma are looking forward to Pebbles Flintstone's first birthday party. Shortly thereafter, Fred and Barney leave for a lodge meeting, even though it's Saturday. The purpose of the meeting is to pick someone to cater the Water Buffaloes' stag party on Sunday night. Fred is tasked with the job of finding a caterer, and figures he can find one that can handle both parties to save money. The men arrive at Cobblestone Caterers, whose owner reveals he's the only caterer in town. Upon seeing the items required for the parties, he first calls in Rocko the clown for Pebbles' party, and the Boulderettes for the stag party. Everything is all set, or so it seems.

Unable to remember who goes where, the caterer opts for a coin toss. Rocko calls heads, and when the coin lands on heads, Rocko goes to the lodge, and the Boulderettes to the Flintstones' residence. Come Sunday night, the Rubbles are there, along with a few kids, and the Alligators Ragtime Band Plus Two. Suddenly, the Boulderettes leap out of the cake to everyone's shock, and instead of soda and Pin the Tail on the Dinosaur, there's cactus juice and a deck of cards for a poker game. Wilma immediately blames Fred for everything, ignoring the fact that he and Barney are trying to set things right. An angry neighbor woman and her husband witness the catastrophe, and the wife is less than pleased, eventually calling the police. Fred and Barney finally figure out that the caterer got the parties mixed up, and Fred leaves to tell the Water Buffaloes. Once he's gone, the police raid the house, and arrest everyone there. Fred gets a flat, but luckily, is able to get a spare tire.

At the Water Buffalo Lodge, the lodge brothers complain about having a clown for entertainment, having only ice cream, cake, and soda pop for refreshments, as well as kiddy games. Like Wilma, they blame Fred, and when he arrives, they pursue him, forcing him to climb a tree. The police have been alerted about the riot, and arrive to arrest Fred, Rocko, and the Water Buffaloes, who see the Boulderettes. At the police station, Fred explains everything to the sergeant, who accepts the explanation. He lets everyone go, and the caterer tells the Boulderettes they still have a benefit to do. They leave with the Water Buffaloes running after them. Wilma apologizes to Fred, admitting her mistake, and Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm laugh, despite everything.

Trivia[]

  • Pebbles had worn the sergeant's hat in the Season 4 episode "Sleep on, Sweet Fred." In this episode, Bamm-Bamm is the one wearing the sergeant's hat.
  • The music that plays whenever the Boulderettes dance was later used in the Season 6 episode "How to Pick a Fight with Your Wife Without Really Trying," when Fred dreams about seeing Wilma at a nightclub.
  • The Alligators Ragtime Band Plus Two is a takeoff on Alexander's Ragtime Band.
  • The Boulderettes are a prehistoric version of the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, right down to the signature dance moves.
  • The statement about a businessman being the only one in town had previously been used in the episode "The Masquerade Ball," when J. Mortimer Stoneface claimed to be the only costumer in town.
  • This is the final appearance of Baby Puss, aside from his appearances in the show's intro and outro. This is also the only episode in which he talks.
  • Dino has a cameo at the beginning of the episode, and Hoppy is completely absent.
  • Barney's statement about how mornings will be when Bamm-Bamm is 16 years old foreshadows The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm show seven years later.
  • The episode inspired the Boy Meets World Season 4 episode "Sixteen Candles and Four-Hundred-Pound Men, " which even references Fred's dilemma about the two parties.

Goofs[]

  • In real life, caterers do not provide live entertainment for parties. They only provide food and drink, and usually prepare it where the party is taking place.
  • There are only three Water Buffaloes at the lodge, including the Grand Poobah. However, when they chase Fred outside, the number briefly increases.
  • Rocko's complaint about entertaining bigger kids is ridiculous. How could he not see that the Water Buffaloes were adults just like him? Then again, he may have said it sarcastically.
  • The nozzle placed over Fred's mouth is gone by the time he wakes up.
  • Given the amount of time it took for Fred to get the spare tire and put it on his car, the police should have arrived at the station with the people from Pebbles' party before getting the message about the riot at the Water Buffalo Lodge.
  • Although the kids at Pebbles' party did become loud and rambunctious about not having ice cream, they hardly did anything that would make the angry woman call them juvenile delinquents.
