The Headless Horseman is the fifth episode of The Funky Phantom. It first aired 9 October 1971.
Summary[]
Mudsy, April, Skip, Augie, Elmo and Boo visit the famous town of Sleepy Hollow. They are introduced to the great-great-great-grandson of Ichabod Crane, who is in hiding because the Headless Horseman has returned in search of his head.
Trivia[]
- This episode was inspired by Washington Irving's 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
- It is revealed (in this canon) that Mudsy and Ichabod Crane were at one point friends.
- Lori is probably a descendant of Katrina Van Tassel, the female tritagonist of the book and Ichabod's vain love interest, and Travers V a descendant of Abraham "Bones" Van Brunt, the antagonist of the book that eventually wins Katrina over in the end.
- It is still unclear of Ichabod Crane's fate at the end of Sleepy Hollow. In the book, it was said that he was "spirited away" by the Headless Horseman, since only his hat was found alongside the pumpkin the Horseman had. But the phrase itself is ambiguous. However, since Ichabod Crane has a direct descendant, it is possible in this canon that he survived and started a family in another town before his offspring returned to Sleepy Hollow centuries later.
- It's ironic itself that Ichie Crane would be the Headless Horseman in this case in an attempt to woo his love interest, whereas in the book Bones dressed up as the Horseman to scare Crane out of town.
