William Christopher (20 October 1932 – 31 December 2016) was an American actor. He is best known for his role as Father Francis Mulcahy on the CBS series M*A*S*H. For Hanna-Barbera, he was the voice of Bjørn in The Little Troll Prince.
Biography[]
When auditioning for his M*A*S*H role, Christopher essentially ignored the monologue prepared for him and instead ad-libbed a rambling speech in a priestly tone. While the producers were disappointed that he didn't deliver his prepared lines, they liked his performance and manner well enough to offer him the role on the condition that from then on, he would stay with the script. Although his priest character was Roman Catholic, Christopher was actually a Methodist.
Christopher was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and a longtime student of Homeric [classical] Greek. He and his wife, Barbara, had been married since 1957. They raised two sons, John and Ned. The latter is autistic.
